The Magic Behind How Dental Implants Work

The metal post is the part of the implant that is placed within the jawbone to function just like tooth roots. It even provides the jawbone with the same stimulation it gets from natural tooth roots to prevent bone loss (a serious complication of tooth loss).

The Implant’s Been Placed. Now What?

Once the implant is surgically placed in the jawbone, we will need to give the area several months to heal before taking the next step. During the healing process, an amazing phenomenon known as osseointegration occurs. This is when the bone fuses together naturally with the implant to become one. The implant’s biocompatible metal is to be thanked for its ability to fuse together with natural bone and tissue. Once this occurs, the implant is now a permanent part of the jawbone.

The Finishing Touches of Your Implant

The next step will be to place the abutment, a structure that serves to secure the dental crown on top of the implant. This will require another minor surgery so that we can open up the gums and attach the abutment on top of the implant. After several more weeks of healing, you’ll come back into our office so that we can cement or secure the permanent dental crown on top of the abutment.
